The number one reason that one would look at doing that is for a cost savings on a trip. Sometimes though, one may be forced to do that just to get where they are going. Within larger cities like London the primary airport usually serves the major airline companies. In London that would be Heathrow Airport. The secondary and smaller airports Like Luton Airport serve the smaller and cheaper regional carriers.

So, one may need to fly out of Heathrow Airport to get somewhere transoceanic and intercontinental, which means flying on the airlines like BMI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United, and Lufthansa. One may find great bargains from London Heathrow to their final destination, but that leaves the question of getting to Heathrow. That could be quite expensive comparative to how much a smaller regional carrier would charge. So, flying to an airport like London’s Luton Airport one could fly on EasyJet, Ryanair, or Wizz Air. Then make the Luton to Heathrow transfer.
