Luton Airport Departures

It can be difficult, when you arrive at an airport to get yourself organised and think about anything beyond booking in for your flight on time. You arrive at the departure lounge and probably have quite a lot of time to waste before your flight arrives. You have probably looked out of the window for five minutes and then taken a further 10 minutes to have a coffee and wander round the shops, what else is there to do. One great way to spend your time is to plan things for your forward journey or for your return. It is worth looking into things like car hire and where to stay, if you have not yet organised it. If you plan on hiring a car on your return to Luton, you may be able to organise that while you wait, rather than having to hope they have a decent car left when you return.

If you are flying abroad it is a good opportunity to learn some of the foreign language or at least search the airport shop for a phrase book. It might even be a good opportunity to catch up on some sleep as you may find it tricky to sleep on the plane. It is a good idea to use this time wisely as you may regret it otherwise. There is always something useful to do if you think about it and so plan before you fly so that you can make the best use of your time.

The airport had its own special ‘onward travel centre’ which is also located in level one of the terminal building. Here you can find out all sorts of travel information for your journey – including train and bus timetables. This is also where you can find car rental companies – although it is recommended you book in advance to ensure you get the best deal and first choice on your car.

If you are not actually arriving, but just waiting for a friend or relative then there are several ways you can check of flight arrival information. The first is via the Internet, Luton airport provides a real-time arrival board which tracks the progress of every flight and will let you know if it as landed on time. As it is so close you will need to make sure that you do book it well in advance as it is likely to be popular and it may be more expensive that some of the ones that are further away. However, if you know you will be shattered when you arrive then it is a good idea to get somewhere close rather than picking up your hire car and drivings somewhere when you are half asleep.

Luton airport played a big role in the Second World War and battle of Britain, even being used in the blockbuster movie battle of Britain.

When the airport was first opened in 1938 converting 373 acres of farmland into Luton airport, the first aircraft stationed at Luton airport were RAF Gladiator fighter aircraft.

Luton was used by the RAFs 264 fighter squadron flying mainly RAF defiant aircraft, throughout the war the airport was used as an aircraft manufacturing base by the Percival aircraft company.

During the 1940 summer and autumn battle of Britain the RAF numbering just 1,963 aircraft to the Luftwaffe’s 4,074 destroyed 1,887 of the Luftwaffe’s aircraft to the RAFs 1,547 aircraft lost.

This amazing victory prevented Germany form gaining the air superiority that it needed to launch Adolf Hitler’s planned operation sea lion the amphibious invasion of Britain.

Although the battle of Britain is looked on as a great British victory the pilots involved came from all over the world including 145polish pilots, 127 pilots of the New Zealand air force, 112 pilots of the Canadian air force, 88 Czechoslovakian pilots, 28 Belgian pilots, 32 pilots of the Australian air force, 25 pilots of the south African air force, 13 free French pilots, 10 Irish pilots, 7 American pilots, one Jamaican air force pilot, one pilot from the British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) and one pilot from southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

The Luftwaffe to a smaller extent also had an international element with the Italian air force flying early sorties with very little success.

Popular Restaurants Around Luton

You have probably heard of this old piece of wisdom before: if you want find a good restaurant while you’re traveling you should eat where the locals eat. Of course the theory is that the locals will know what is good and what isn’t because they’ve probably tried them all by now. So go ahead and ask around, or check out some review sites online, or better yet just get out there and see which restaurants are packed full of people and you should be happy with the results. You’ll need some way of getting around to see them all though, and that is where a Luton airport car rental comes in handy if you’re visiting by plane.

I can get you started with a few of the most popular restaurants here. If you are looking for a romantic place to spend the evening with your partner then try Le Steak Parisien on Wellington Street; this place has been here for 20 years and is still serving up some of the best steak you will find anywhere, as well as other French cuisine, and I can’t forget to mention the great wine.

Or do you feel like some Thai food? Nakorn Thai Restaurant has what you want. It is even recommended by visitors from Thailand so you know you’re in for the real deal if you eat here. I have eaten at many so-called Thai restaurants that are nothing more than a Chinese take out that just happens to have green curry on the menu; Nakorn Thai is not that.

If you’ve got an animal lover in the family and want to do something new, check out Woodside Animal Farm in Luton. Perfect for a day trip with the family, the farm not only features plenty of animals for the little ones, they even have improvised “rides”! The farm is huge, encompassing almost 7 acres. One of the selling points of the farm are “animal encounters”, when your kids can feed and feel farm animals, as well as exotic animals. There are a ton of different animals there, including the ones you’d normally find at the farm (sheep, cows, chicken, pigs) to the ones you don’t (iguanas, owls, snakes). The farm is beautiful on a nice day, so be sure to bring your camera. The Woodside Animal Farm is located off the M1 near Luton.
